About Us
Green Islands is a Network for
Green Parties in Britain, Ireland and associated islands. The Network is affiliated with
the European Green Party (EGP).
The member Parties are England, Wales,
Jersey, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Republic of Ireland.
Green Islands was formed in Dublin in
1995, when members of the Green Parties of these islands attending the AGM of Comhaontas
Glás decided to network on Common Campaigns, such as Nuclear Matters; GMOs,
Nationalism, Election campaigns. A set of
Statutes was developed.
Green Islands Network -
or GIN, as it is affectionately known, meets at least twice yearly, in
conjunction with the European Green Party Council Meetings, in the Spring
and in the Autumn.
GIN also organises internal
one day or weekend conferences for the member
parties, and for the public.
Green Summit, instituted in Belfast in
2004, is an annual event which allows the
parliamentarians of the Member Parties to meet for strategic co-operation.
According
to its Statutes, the Network exists to facilitate:
a.
communication and contacts between member parties and between members of different
member parties;
b. co-ordination of specific campaigns and policy initiatives between member
parties;
c. co-operation in preparation for and at times of elections;
d. co-ordination of the activities of member parties and their representatives,
in the European Federation of Green Parties;
e. support of member parties’ Members of the European Parliament;
f. communication between member parties and the Green Group in the European
Parliament;
g. support of member parties’ representatives in other supranational bodies;
h. communication between member parties and Greens in other supranational bodies.
Each of the Member Parties appoints
delegates for a two years term. Administrative matters are the responsibility of the
Secretariat. The
co- Secretaries, or Secretary are elected in November of the
even=numbered years.
